To freedom!
Dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the birth of Rudolf Nureyev
To make your body as sensitive and ringing as the tree of the old straddler, to achieve that it becomes all one musical instrument, sounding with inner harmonies – this is the ideal goal of the art of dance.
Maximilian Voloshin, 1911
The 80th anniversary of the birth of Rudolf Nureyev, the undisputed genius of dance, is a real rest for amateurs and professionals of ballet art. The anniversary brings us back to the past, because modern Russian reality is quite far from the Soviet 1961, from the young promising soloist of the Leningrad Opera and Ballet Theater named after I. CM.
Kirov, who made a leap into freedom.
Although the image of Nureyev is so far away (or, on the scale of art history, so far away) from us, it is difficult to deny the emotional charge associated with him, which tends to last for more than a decade …
It is the emotional impact of the personality and fate of the great artist that explains the desire of the Moscow artist Alexander Chalovsky to get in touch with the image of the great magician and dance magician, with his mobile substance, in which the spiritual and physical are inextricably linked. It seems
it is about Rudolf Nureyev that Maximilian Voloshin wrote in his essay “On the Meaning of Dance”: “Dance is the same sacred ecstasy of the body, as prayer is the ecstasy of the soul. Therefore, dance is in its essence the highest and most ancient of all arts. It is higher than music, it is higher than poetry,
because in dancing outside the medium of the word and outside the medium of the instrument, a person himself becomes an instrument, a song and a creator, and his whole body sounds like the timbre of a voice. “
Rudolf Nureyev is a symbol of a person who creates the immortal art of Dance. Having become a great ballet dancer as a part of the ancient world element of rhythmic movement, he made his body an infinitely obedient instrument and brought Dance into the ballet – he brought it as nature, as the only one (for him, of course,
therefore he has no equal!) a way of creative relaxedness and freedom …
Nureyev found a new way of expressing artistic truth. He pushed the framework of classical ballet not by rejecting strict, centuries-old gestures and steps, but by the fact that movement is the essence of a learned drawing of movement – he performed, as it were, from within himself, and so naturally,
that the audience, once again watching, say, “Giselle”, perceived what was happening not as déjà vu, but as something absolutely unprecedented and new emotionally … until the audience reached the highest aesthetic ecstasy … Following Vaslav Nijinsky, Nureyev proved
that passion and beauty have no limits.
In our project, we (painter Alexander Chalovsky, curator and producer Natella Voiskunskaya and co-curator Olga Leonova) set the goal to recreate the image of Nureyev, who has become a symbol of creative emancipation, an iconic figure of virtuoso artistry and professional acme. Rudolf Nureyev made a landmark act
, who determined his fate … And then he devoted his whole life to what this act was done for. Nureyev managed to fully realize his creative power and use the freedom gained “in a leap to the West” … He became “great N.” by right – in one year he gave as many performances as in his entire career the other “great N.
“- Vaclav Nijinsky!
Rudolf Nureyev is a symbol of the 20th century ballet. You can add: Russian ballet; for the whole world he became Rudi, and the whole world fell ill with Rudimania!
Alexander Chalovsky talentedly embodies the “sacred ecstasy” of the gestures that have become canonical for the genius dancer in his canvases.
The artist took this project as a challenge,
relying on the fact that the measure of the talent released to him and the skill achieved will allow him to adequately and convincingly not only recreate the image of Rudolf Nureyev, but also convey to the audience all the attractive power of the magical and daring genius of the Dance.

Beauty castle architect
Dedication to Mikhail Baryshnikov
How nice it is in the evening, in the distance of All Russia,
Baryshnikov to mature. His talent has not been erased!
Leg force and torso cramp
with rotation around its own axis
give birth to the flight that the soul
as girls are tired of waiting, ready to get angry!
Joseph Brodsky
The exhibition of paintings by Alexander Chalovsky “The Architect of the Castle of Beauty” is a dedication to the great dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov and a kind of continuation of the exhibition “To Freedom!” “Recommendations” by Joseph Brodsky.
Rudolf Nureyev and Mikhail Baryshnikov are connected by the fundamental understanding of their mission – the talent given to them, the divine spark must be used to achieve the heights of skill and complete artistic self-realization.
The image of Mikhail Baryshnikov instantly refers us to the symbolic concept of ballet in the broadest sense of the word – from classical to modern modernist … And further: from ballet – to theater and cinema, because Baryshnikov proved himself to be a first-class dramatic actor.
One of the symbols of the 20th century ballet, Mikhail Baryshnikov is a magnet,
attracting great creative personalities: Mstislav Rostropovich, Galina Vishnevskaya, Alexander Galich, Joseph Brodsky, Annie Leibovitz, Oscar de la Renta, Julio Iglesias …
The artist Alexander Chalovsky is inspired by the image of the “dance genius” Mikhail Baryshnikov, who “creates” the living and life-giving.
A series of works presented at the exhibition,
as it turns back time, for it brings us back to the images created by the outstanding dancer in the prime of his career. Carefully observing the rise of his artist friend, Joseph Brodsky in 1976 wrote a poetic dedication to “Mikhail Baryshnikov”, in which he proposed an elegant formula: “Classical ballet is a castle of beauty.”
From picture to picture, the artist Alexander Chalovsky reveals to the audience the process of “building” this beautiful castle with soaring “Gothic” jumps and stained glass “lace” of classical duets-adagios.
